MERIDIAN —
A 10-month old baby shot, along with its mother, outside a local housing complex Monday evening, is recovering from injuries at Blair Baxton Children's Hospital in Jackson.
"She's doing much better now," Capt. Dean Harper of the Meridian Police Department said.
The mother and child, which was initially reported to be a year old, were shot outside of Eastern Gardens Apartments around 5 p.m. Both were shot in the arm, Harper said.
The mother's injuries were non life-threatening, Harper said. She was released shortly after receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
Police continue to investigate the incident, the second in less than a month at the housing complex, which is located in the 200 block of 23rd Street. On Nov. 11, a man standing outside his residence at Eastern Gardens Apartments was shot. His wound was also considered non life-threatening.
Harper said while police are working to solve this and other criminal incidents in the area, assistance from the public is crucial.
"Once again we have someone shot – this time a 10-month old child – and no one will come forward with any information," he said. "My question is: What's it going to take before people step up and provide information about the crime in their community? We can't do it on our own; we need their help."
Anyone with information about this or any other incident should call CrimeStoppers at (601) 485-1860, or go to the Meridian Police Department's Facebook page and leave a "cybertip" after clicking the "About" section on the page, then follow the directions.
