Armed robbers wearing masks targeted Cefco convenience stores on North HIlls Street and Highway 39 north in separate incidents that occurred days apart.
"I have to admit it makes me a little nervous," Cefco store clerk Frederick Hearn said.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday, two men wearing masks entered the Cefco store on North Hills Street near Hardees and Winn Dixie and robbed the clerk at gunpoint before running away on foot, according to a Meridian Police Department press release.
An undetermined amount of money was taken. Hearn's shift ended at 11 p.m., two hours before the robbery occurred. No one was injured.
"I heard the other clerk was OK; he was just a little shook up," Hearn said.
In a similar incident last Friday at 11:45 p.m. two masked men entered the Cefco store on Highway 39 north of Old Marion Road and robbed the clerk at gunpoint, according to police.
A police spokesman declined to comment when asked by The Meridian Star if it is believed the two robberies are related, although another media outlet reported that police have said the robberies may have been committed by the same people.
Grainy surveillance camera footage of the robberies released by police showed two masked suspects. In the first robbery one was wearing a dark hat, dark coat and dark face mask. Footage of the second robbery showed one of the men dressed in a similar fashion.
Store personnel are taking extra precautions since the robberies, asking loiterers to leave the premises and notifying police if they do not.
"I feel like I have to be more aware of my surroundings," Hearn said.
If you have information about either of the robberies, call Crime Stoppers at (601) 485-1860.
