Man shot and killed in Meridian's 8th murder

MERIDIAN —     A man apparently returning home from shopping at a neighborhood store was shot and killed Wednesday night in Meridian.

    This marks the eighth murder in Meridian this year.

    Lt. Dean Harper, commander of the Meridian Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, said the victim, a Hispanic man in his late 30s or early 40s, was shot at about 6:30 p.m. at the corner of 49th Avenue and Fifth Street. The suspect, a black man, was captured by a MPD patrol officer after a short foot chase.

    James Henderson III, 18, was arrested and charged with murder and armed robbery.

    "The officer was patrolling the area and was right around the block when the shooting broke out," said Harper. "The officer heard the shot and observed the suspect running from the scene. He got out of his patrol unit and chased down the suspect within a half block."

    Harper said a handgun thought by detectives to have been used in the incident was recovered. Harper said the suspect was taken to the MPD where Wednesday night he was being questioned.

    Harper said paramedics from Metro Ambulance arrived on the scene minutes later to find MPD officers giving the victim CPR. The victim was taken to a Meridian hospital but died a half hour later.

    Harper did not say how many times the victim had been shot as the investigation is continuing. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

    Harper said no motive has been determined but he said from all early indications this incident was not associated with any gang activity.

     If it is determined the victim was robbed in the instance of committing a murder, the suspect could be charged with capital murder and thereby be eligible for the death penalty if convicted, officials said.
