Local soup kitchens and service agencies are making sure everyone has food this Thanksgiving holiday.
"We're cooking for 500, our numbers have gone up and down lately. But we're prepared to cook extra," said Fannie Johnson, director of kitchen operations at LOVE's Kitchen.
The soup kitchen, located at 801 18th Ave., will operate under its regular meal schedule today: breakfast, from 7:15 a.m.-8 a.m.; lunch from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Breakfast will consist of pancakes, ham and eggs, grits, milk and juice.
A traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings will be served: turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, green beans, rolls, assorted desserts and tea.
The meals will be served by staff as well as volunteers who have signed up to help out.
The Salvation Army will also provide Thanksgiving dinner at its shelter located at 710 B Street. Dinner will be served from 3 p.m.-5 p.m.
"We will serve anyone who wants a meal – individuals, families as well as shelter residents," said Rosemary Reynolds, a Salvation Army spokesperson.
Wesley House Community Center provided more than 1,200 Thanksgiving dinners.
On Sunday, a pre-Thanksgiving meal was served at the shelter for more than 50 individuals. During the week, Thanksgiving baskets were provided to local residents and families.
"The baskets included everything to prepare Thanksgiving dinner," said Ginger Grissom, executive director of the facility located at 1520 Eighth Ave. "Depending on the size of the family, the recipient received a hen or a turkey."
While LOVE's Kitchen was well stocked for Thanksgiving, Johnson welcomes donations for their upcoming Christmas dinner. Financial contributions are also encouraged.
"While we're always grateful for all the food donations we receive, we really need monetary contributions to pay electric and other utility bills," Johnson said.
The signup list for volunteers to serve at LOVE's Kitchen will be available after the first week in December.
Food donations for the Salvation Army Shelter are also welcomed, Reynolds said, and may be delivered to the facility during regular business hours, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
