MERIDIAN —
Outrageous results are expected from this year's fundraiser for Meridian Community College's Tuition Guarantee Program, as evidenced by Wednesday's kickoff luncheon.
Lady Gaga and Steven Tyler, two of the music industry's most outrageous artists, made an impromptu appearance at the midday event to pump up members of the MCC Foundation Board of Directors to raise funds for Tuition Guarantee. Team captains Hayley Shirley and Jonathan Bell were dressed in full gear to emulate their GaGa and Tyler personas.
Tuition Guarantee guarantees tuition for four consecutive semesters to high school graduates in Meridian and Lauderdale County, including home schooled graduates. Since its inception in 1996, the program has helped more than 4,000 students.
"This is a great tuition program for those who qualify," said Jeff McCoy, MCC Foundation president. "A number of students depend on that ever year, so the Foundation really works hard to make sure that we provide the resources necessary for that program to continue."
While there is no set goal for the amount of funds raised each year, McCoy said the Foundation "hopes to do as much as the previous year," and a little more.
"Last year was our best ever, given the economy; we were just tickled to death," he said. "We're hopeful for this year."
After the musical performances, Brookshire presented campaign pointers to foundation members, who were armed with brochures and other information. Businesses which support Tuition Guarantee are known as The President's Roundtable, which includes varying contribution levels – from contributor to President's Circle ($5,000 and above). To apply for Tuition Guarantee, high school graduates must take the ACT, complete the application for Federal Student Aid, apply for the Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant and enroll at MCC as a full-time student.

The Drought Is Over
All Mason Irby was hoping for was to find a way on base.
The Southeast Lauderdale sophomore did that and so much more. Irby's single with two outs in the seventh inning broke a tie, lifting the Tigers to a 6-3 MHSAA Class 3A state championship win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday, and handing Southeast (32-7) its first title since 1966. -
