MERIDIAN —
At a special luncheon to welcome Mississippi State legislators to the 2013 session, the Mississippi Development Authority’s Tourism Division along with the Mississippi Tourism Association recently unveiled the cover of the 2013 Official Mississippi Tour Guide.
Published annually, the tour guide is a comprehensive handbook of Mississippi attractions, events, accommodations, restaurants, local contacts, maps, mileage charts and other travel information.
“As one of our key marketing tools, the 2013 Official Mississippi Tour Guide is an all-in-one resource for anyone planning a trip to Mississippi,” said MDA’s Tourism Director Malcolm White in a news release. “Using input from tourism industry partners statewide, the guide brings Mississippi’s diverse culture, food, attractions and more alive with vibrant imagery and comprehensive material highlighting each region of the state.”
The 2013 edition features Mississippi country music artist Faith Hill. It will be available for distribution later this month.
White stated: “Faith Hill is such a familiar and popular personality. She represents the wealth of cultural talent in Mississippi and embodies the warm, inviting character that brings visitors from across the globe to our state. We are very pleased to have her as a part of this project.”
The luncheon was also an opportunity for Mississippi tourism industry partners to network with legislators and reiterate tourism’s economic impact. According to FY 2012 figures, the state’s 21.2 million visitors spent $6.16 billion in Mississippi. Those visitor expenditures produced $625 million in state and city/county tax revenues.
“Travel and tourism in Mississippi is a good investment for our state,” added White. “For every $1 spent on advertising and marketing, Mississippi receives $6.46 in return. As the legislative session kicks off, the Mississippi tourism industry will continue to work with our state legislators to get the support we need to continue to market and promote our state competitively.”
Two legislators were recognized during the luncheon as the 2013 Mississippi Tourism Association’s Friends of Tourism. District 120 Rep. Richard Bennett (R) and District 37 Senator Melanie Sojourner (R).
