MERIDIAN —
U.S. marshals captured a man in Anniston, Ala., who was wanted by the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department and York (Ala.) Police Department authorities for recent incidents that included the stealing of a York police car.
LCSD Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said late Friday afternoon his office was contacted informing officials in Meridian that the U.S. Marshals Service, working on information provided by York authorities, were able to locate and arrest Dustin Curtis Stokley Jr., at an undisclosed location in Anniston. Calhoun said Stokley is expected to be transported to York to face charges there stemming from the theft of a police unit last week. Calhoun said Stokley is also wanted in Lauderdale County for the alleged burglaries of at least two volunteer fire departments.
Last week, law enforcement officials reported police in York were taking Dustin Stokley into custody when Stokley reportedly stole a York police car, a black and white Dodge Charger. Stokley is said to have fled York on Highway 17 where the police unit was later found. A search of the nearby wooded area was conducted but Stokley slipped through the dragnet.
Jonathan L. Price, 27, of Meridian, was taken into custody two weeks ago and formally charged with two counts of receiving stolen property. Price was placed on $10,000 bond for each charge and is currently being held in the Lauderdale County Adult Detention Facility in Meridian.
Stokley Jr. was being sought in connection with two burglaries, one at the Alamucha Volunteer Fire Department and the other at the Center Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Stokley has two warrants for receiving stolen property issued in his name. Stokley will likely be extradited to Lauderdale County in the coming days after he has faced those charges in York.
Calhoun said some of the property reported stolen has been recovered and returned to the fire departments. Still more property has not been located.
