MERIDIAN —
A rash of incidents involving stolen vehicles in both Lauderdale and Clarke counties have had officials in both places searching for the vehicles and the perpetrators.
Recently some of those cars and a few of the suspected individuals have been uncovered.
"We aren't sure yet if all these instances are connected but we continue to look into it," said Maj. Casey McElhenney, commander of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Criminal Investigation Division.
On Nov. 7, McElhenny said they received a report that two vehicles had been stolen on David Newell Road. While making his way to the location, a deputy came across another vehicle that looked to have been abandoned on Old Country Club Road West. It turned out to be a vehicle stolen earlier in Clarke County.
A truck that was also reported stolen from Clarke County was found a short time later in Meridian by patrol officers of the Meridian Police Department. And while all this was going on, MPD patrol officers came across the two original stolen vehicles from David Newell Road.
"It was busy there for a while as we were running from one place to another to process these vehicles," McElhenney said. "From the physical evidence we collected, we believe the same individuals are responsible."
A day earlier, on Nov. 6, a vehicle was reported stolen in Lauderdale County and two days later the owner spotted the vehicle driving down North Hills Street.
McElhenney said the owner was able to follow the vehicle and direct MPD and LCSD units. The vehicle was stopped in Marion and three juveniles were taken into custody.
McElhenny said one of the juveniles was charged with vehicle theft and the other two were charged with receiving stolen property.
"Are all of these connected?" said McElhenney. "We're not quite sure yet but we are working to find out and to get everyone involved in custody."
