MERIDIAN —
Bringing the community together through homemade peanut butter, home-grown squash and other produce, hundreds of patrons of the second Earth’s Bounty event were impressed Saturday.
“The community is really starting to buy into what downtown Meridian has to offer,” said Michael Van Veckhoven. The Meridian native attended the festival, held in Singing Brakeman Park from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, with his four year old daughter, Lucyanne.
“I applaud the efforts Meridian Main Street and those who worked together to make this event possible,” Van Veckhoven said.
Tomato relish and squash vendor Julius Paul was pleased with the turnout. His stand saw steady foot traffic, and customers bragged on his homemade relish recipe.
“I just enjoy sharing my mother’s relish recipe with others. It doesn’t feel like work to make it, and the money I make goes to make more for future sales,” said Paul.
Meridian Main Street’s Belgian mare mascot, Tiny, was on hand to entertain children in the kid’s area, which also offered a jump house and bungee jump. Admission to the event was free, and passersby were drawn into the fragrant smell of canned jellies, caramel pies, and homemade salsa.
Lindsey Wiard, Kewannee resident, stopped by the festival while finishing her Saturday errands. “
I saw some signs and people headed this direction. I’m glad I dropped by because my husband loves fresh honey," Wiard said. "I bought two jars so now I’ve got to go home to make biscuits to go with them.”
New additions to the event included a knife-sharpening service and freshly-cut flowers for sale.
Wiard is eagerly awaiting the next festival: “I hope a third Earth’s Bounty plan is already in the works. I certainly plan to be back.”
