MERIDIAN —
One person has been arrested but two others — who are thought to be a part of a car burglary ring that has plagued an area of Lauderdale County recently — remain at large.
Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said investigators arrested a Lauderdale County man Tuesday night. Calhoun said the name of the suspect is being withheld until formal charges can be filed.
Two other individuals, both from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, are now being sought by Tuscaloosa authorities, Calhoun said.
Late on the night of June 22, Calhoun said several vehicles were broken into in the West Crescent Lake and Pine Drive South areas of Lauderdale County. Calhoun said a wide assortment of items were reported missing including purses, cell phones, stereo equipment and money left inside the cars. Calhoun said some cars were unlocked and received no damage as the suspects ransacked the inside. But others suffered window breakage from bricks.
Calhoun said Crime Stopper tips have helped in the case. He said a detailed description of the suspect vehicle was given, leading to the arrest of the Lauderdale County suspect.
Calhoun said investigators are in the process of tracking down some of the items reported missing as well as searching for the other two suspects.
