MERIDIAN —
A reported sexual assault at East Mississippi Correctional Facility kept investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department busy Monday afternoon.
According to Sheriff Billy Sollie, the victim, said to have been 29 years of age, was transported from the facility located at Lost Gap on Highway 80 West to a Meridian hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries. Sollie said the victim had allegedly been beaten and then sexually assaulted by his cellmate. The incident reportedly occurred around 2:30 p.m.
Sollie said the suspect in the case, who is 22 years old, has not been charged. Sollie said documentation and evidence was taken at the scene and will be a part of the ongoing investigation. Sollie said all the findings would then be presented to a grand jury for consideration. The suspect will be held at the facility according to GEO prison procedures pending the grand jury decision.
