MERIDIAN —
A Meridian man is still hospitalized recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered shortly after midnight Wednesday during what police say was an attempted residential burglary.
In a press release issued by Lt. Dean Harper of the Meridian Police Department, Richard Neal Whitman, 22, of Meridian, has been charged with aggravated assault, attempted burglary to a residence, possession of a firearm and two counts of possession of cocaine. Whitman was placed on $50,000 bond for the attempted burglary and possession of a stolen firearm charges, $15,000 each on the cocaine possession charges, and $75,000 bond for the aggravated assault offense.
According to the release, MPD patrol officers were called to the 8200 block of Eagle Pointe Drive at about 12:55 a.m. Wednesday to a call of a shooting. When officers arrived the shooting victim had already been transported by private vehicle to a Meridian hospital emergency room. The victim had been reportedly shot once in the side of the middle torso, said the release.
Whitman was on the scene and was taken into custody by officers, according to police. Detectives also were able to locate and confiscate the firearm allegedly used in the assault. The release said the firearm was a small caliber handgun.
During the investigation by detectives, it was determined that the gun used in this incident was stolen during an attempted burglary on the night of Oct. 9 in the 5000 block of Third Place, the release said. The gun was stolen from a resident of the house when he dropped it while chasing the
suspects away from his house.
