July Earth’s Bounty event adds new features

MERIDIAN —     The second of this summer’s Earth’s Bounty festivals will herald the return of popular produce and homemade products featured at the June festival, and also introduce new products and produce fresh from area farms and kitchens.

The upcoming festival, to be held on July 7 at Singing Brakeman Park from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. will also boast new and returning entertainers and a greatly expanded children’s activity area.

New vendors for the July festival will have for sale such products as: Homemade peanut butter, pickles, fresh eggs, cut flowers, quail and rabbits, homemade ice cream, flavored oils, and additional baked goods like caramel cake

And a brand new service will be offered by an expert knife sharpener who will be on hand to sharpen kitchen cutlery and other small implements.

“Who doesn’t need dull knives sharpened?” said John McClure, executive director of Meridian Main Street, which sponsors the monthly festival with the Meridian Area Farmer’s Market. “We encourage folks to bring their knives to be sharpened so they can slice up all the wonderful produce they can buy here. Just be responsible and make sure the knives are handled and carried safely.”

Vendors will also set up with favorite products from the June festival, including: Fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade salsa, freshly ground seasonings, honey, baked goods, jams and jellies, live plants, and lemonade.

In the children’s area, Tiny, Meridian Main Street’s Belgian mare mascot, will be returning. Kids will love the jump house — just $2 for an armband for unlimited jumping — and a bungee jump for $5 per session. A program featuring verses of children’s author Shel Silverstein will be presented by Richelle Putnam, a Mississippi Arts Commission teaching artist who works with children throughout Mississippi in schools, pre-schools, libraries and other venues. She will be accompanied by Amy Lott, a multi-faceted instrumentalist, who is a member of the Highland Baptist Church orchestra and also plays with various groups in the Meridian music scene.

Putnam will also be featured on the main stage. Her group, which also includes Lott and Joey Ethridge, will perform 10:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Earlier, guitarist and singer Steve Wilkerson returns to the Earth’s Bounty stage. He will perform from 8:45 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

There will be plenty of food to munch on while browsing and shopping. Concessionaire Circle S will be back, selling hamburgers and chicken and fish plates and fried green tomatoes. Admission to Earth’s Bounty is free.
