MERIDIAN —
For 12 hours a lone gunman terrorized residents in the Dogwood Lake Road area of Lauderdale County by allegedly firing shot after shot near their homes.
Thursday morning, the suspect in the shooting incident was arrested after a vehicle chase that ended in Meridian.
Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said Anthony Duane Talley Jr., 31, of Meridian, was taken into custody around 10 a.m. after Talley fled from his crippled vehicle and tried to escape on foot in Meridian. Talley has been charged with felony fleeing and felon in possession of a firearm. Calhoun said Talley will likely be facing numerous traffic violations in connection with the vehicle chase and possibly more felony charges as the investigation continues.
Calhoun said residents at the Dogwood Lake Trailer Park, located at 1213 Dogwood Lake Road, began calling Central Dispatch Wednesday night to report a man was in the park shooting a semi-automatic handgun in the air. When deputies arrived, Talley had left the area and could not be located.
Calhoun said witnesses told investigators at times Talley threatened residents by pointing the weapon at them. Calhoun said multiple bullet casings from a 9mm firearm were recovered at the scene. He said the shots fired were all into the air.
Around 8 a.m. Thursday, Central Dispatch began receiving more calls that Talley had returned, this time with a semi-automatic submachine gun. Talley again left the scene before officers arrived but two hours later he returned. This time deputies were near the area and attempted to stop Talley from leaving in his vehicle at which point the vehicle chase began.
Calhoun said the pursuit traveled south on Highway 39 toward Meridian and that Talley at times waved the weapon at deputies. Calhoun said Talley threw the weapon out the window. It was later recovered as evidence in the case.
Deputies were able to disable Talley's vehicle at the Highway 39/45 interchange utilizing spike strips designed to shred the tires. Calhoun said this slowed the chase down considerably but Talley continued into Meridian where Meridian Police Department units joined in the pursuit. Minutes later, Talley dumped his vehicle at 14th Avenue and 21st Street and attempted to flee on foot. Talley was taken into custody by sheriff's deputies after a short foot chase.
Upon further inspection, the gun Talley threw out the window was discovered to be a BB gun. Calhoun said the resemblance to an authentic MP5 9mm weapon commonly used by law enforcement SWAT Teams was such that if Talley had pointed it at any of the officers or deputies, the outcome of the incident may not have been the same.
Talley is being held in the Lauderdale County Adult Detention Facility in Meridian pending the outcome of the investigation.
