Prison inmate stabbed

MERIDIAN —     Authorities with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said Monday they were notified by the staff at East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Lost Gap of a stabbing incident.

Sheriff Billy Sollie said the inmate that was stabbed multiple times was transported to a Meridian emergency room for treatment. Sollie said an inmate is being held in the case, in which the investigation is ongoing. Sollie did not release the name of the suspect. Sollie said the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the common area of the prison.

"Our investigators and the EMCF staff are still looking into this incident to ensure they have everyone accounted for who was involved in this incident," said Sollie.

Sollie said the injuries to the inmate were non-life threatening.

Sollie said the information gathered during the investigation would be turned over to the Lauderdale County grand jury for consideration.
