Gregg Harper speaks at MCC

MERIDIAN —     U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper was the keynote speaker for Meridian Community College's Business & Industry Appreciation Luncheon held Friday at MCC's Workforce Development Center.

Harper congratulated MCC on its 75th anniversary, which the college is celebrating. He also congratulated the business and industrial leaders who partner with MCC.

"If you're here all the time you may take it for granted," Harper said. "But you have a jewel here."

The program opened with a video that included testimonials from area business people who have benefitted from MCC's Workforce Development department.

In his opening remarks MCC President Scott Elliott said there is a strong correlation between quality of life and having a viable workforce. He said MCC offers 50 different career and technical programs as he thanked community partners at the luncheon. "We don't do that in a vacuum," Elliott said.

While speaking to guests Harper also alluded to some of the upcoming challenges he foresees in Congress, including gun control issues, government spending and the deficit.

"We're going to see some major discussions. There's going to be some trench warfare in the months to come," Harper said. He added that while it's not going to be fun, the nation is strong enough to withstand anything.

A Republican representing Mississippi's Third Congressional District, Harper is beginning his third term in office. He serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Committee on House Administration, and is chairman of the Joint Committee of the Library of Congress.
