MERIDIAN — Meridian Community College Sophomore Megan Mowdy lives to sing, and she loves to share her passion for music.
20-year-old Megan is a Kemper County resident, and her love of music helped her to become the first member of her family to attend college.
"I'm heavily involved in the music department," she said. "The two music instructors Tammy Miles and Twyla Hurst were very instrumental in getting me to MCC."
And it's no wonder Miles and Hurst worked to recruit her — Megan's singing voice is outstanding, and it makes her an especially valuable addition to Meridian Community College, where she sings with the Dimensions group and the MCC Chorus.
Megan is majoring in music with a vocal emphasis, and is currently working to add piano playing to her musical accomplishments through classes at MCC.
Megan has always loved to sing and grew up singing in her church choir, but said college has really broadened her musical horizons.
"My knowledge of music has greatly expanded since I've been at MCC," she said. "You just learn so many things here that are more than just how to sing a note or beat a rhythm. You learn things like punctuality, self-worth, working as a team. There are so many life lesson in the world of music that go beyond notes and rhythm.
After she graduates MCC, Megan said she plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi where she will major in Music Education and Music Performance. Once she graduates there, she said she's headed overseas to share her love of music with the world.
After traveling to Russia, Brazil, South Korea, and Guatemala, Megan said she plans to start a music school for children overseas.
"I just love experiencing (other) culture(s), and there are other places that need to be reached out for that are not as well off as we are," she said. "I just have a heart for that and I have a heart for music."
