MERIDIAN —

    Each year, the Meridian Area Navy League awards two $500 scholarships to deserving students to help with costs of higher education. This year, however, the organization upped the ante and will bestow two $750 scholarships.

    "We are always very pleased to offer these scholarships to help local students pursue their degrees," said Navy League President Crystal Dupré. "The cost of higher education is always rising and we felt offering more value in the scholarships would help families and students meet their needs."

    Dependent spouses and children of active duty military members currently serving at Naval Air Station Meridian and dependents of retired military members who previously served at NAS Meridian and now live in the local area are eligible. Also, NJROTC cadets from local area schools are eligible for the scholarships. Applicants must plan to attend either an accredited junior college or an accredited four-year college or university.

    All applications postmarked by Friday, June 18, will be considered.

     The scholarship committee, consisting of three members of the Meridian Area Navy League Board of Directors, will evaluate all applications. The committee will present the selected applicants and alternates to the Navy League Executive Committee for approval prior to awarding scholarship funds. Recipients will be announced by Thursday, July 15. Funds, which are to be used toward the cost of tuition, fees, and books, will be presented in the form of a check payable to the college the applicant will attend.

    Applications may be picked at the NAS Meridian School Liaison’s Office, BLDG 255, RM 171, phone (601) 679-2473, or you may get a form at the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation office in Union Station on Front Street in Meridian. Phone (601) 693-1306.

     Applications should be mailed to the Meridian Area Navy League, P.O. Box 790, Meridian, MS 39302-0790, or hand-delivered to the EMBDC in Union Station.

Police search for robbery suspects
Two men who reportedly robbed a woman at gunpoint in the parking lot of a local bank are still being sought.
Mike Vick, public information officer with the Meridian Police Department, said the two men approached a woman about 8 p.m. Tuesday at the ATM of Regions Bank on North Hills Street. Vick said one of the suspects was armed with a handgun and after taking an undetermined amount of cash and the victim's car keys, the two suspects fled on foot.

City cuts payment to Watkins
The Meridian City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to cut their monthly payment to David Watkins, project developer of Meridian's new police station, by $9,999 until work resumes on the project.
The order, made during the Meridian City Council meeting Tuesday morning, included a mutual agreement between the councilmen and Watkins to reduce the project developer's monthly consultant fee of $10,000 to $1, effective Tuesday.

Crews work on gasoline pipeline
If you hear a loud, booming sound early today, between 4 a.m.-10 a.m., there is no cause for alarm.
Workers with Plantation Pipeline will be performing maintenance work on their 30-foot gasoline pipeline in the Meridian area to accommodate the widening of Highway 493. The location of the work activity will be at Highway 493 North and Oak Hill Baptist Church, just inside the city limits.
