Longleaf field day is Tuesday

MERIDIAN —     Learn how to improve wildlife habitat by attending a Longleaf Pine Field Day from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The event is sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation Mississippi State Chapter in partnership with various state and national organizations.

It will take place at the Jones County Junior College Advanced Technology Center, 72 Technology Boulevard in Ellisville.

Well-managed longleaf pine stands provide quality habitat for a wide variety of wildlife and provide valuable specialty lumber products with cost-share programs available, according to a press release. Longleaf pine is also an attractive option for landowners due to its resistance to pests and disease, its ability to withstand storms and high winds and its aesthetic appeal.

The field day will include discussion about longleaf pine options and applications with wildlife biologists and foresters, and attendees can learn how to enhance wildlife habitat on their property.

    Topics will include:

    • Management of longleaf pine

    • Economic and wildlife benefits of longleaf pine

    • Use of prescribed burn

    • Landowner cost share programs

Partners with the NWTF for the event include the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Mississippi Forestry Commission, Mississippi State University Extension Service, Jones County Junior College, Mississippi Partners for Wildlife, Mississippi Forestry Association, Jones County Landowners Association, Mississippi Wildlife, USDA Forest Service, the Longleaf Alliance and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Registration is $5 and includes lunch from Dean’s Smokehouse BBQ. On-site registration will be at 8 a.m. in the foyer of the Jones County Junior College Advanced Technology Center.

For more information, contact the Mississippi State University Extension Service office in Jones County at (601) 428-5201 or Kim Tolbert at ktolbert@ext.msstate.edu.
