MERIDIAN —
Within an hour, officials from Peco Foods Inc. had garnered nearly two dozen resumes from participants at the fourth annual College and Job Fair Thursday that was sponsored by Mississippi State University-Meridian and Meridian Community College.
“We’ve had a lot of good candidates,” said William Gully III, complex human resources director for Peco Foods. This was the company’s initial appearance at the event, which brought employers and potential employees together under one roof.
Fair officials estimate more than 300 people came to talk to representatives in the business and educational arenas.
“This is a wonderful turn-out; one of the biggest one I think we’ve had up to date,” said MCC President Dr. Scott Elliott. “A lot of folks out there are looking for opportunities both educational and in the workforce and I am just really gratified that MCC and MSU-Meridian partnered to put on this event.”
“We’re pleased we’ve had several new vendors for this year’s event and a larger community response. During tough economic times both colleges think it’s very important to offer this opportunity to the communities we serve,” said Candy Adams, recruiting coordinator at MSU-Meridian.
MSU-Meridian Associate Professor of Marketing William W. Hill II, who talked to students and job seekers, was also pleased with the response to the college and job fair, noting that many he encountered were eager to learn more about the educational opportunities available.
Participants ranged from high school students seeking information about attending MCC, to transfer students getting details on completing their degree, to individuals who are seeking to re-enter the workforce.
Mary Lee Long-Bowen, a veteran, said, “This is the best job fair I’ve seen.”
Long-Bowen, who handed out 10 resumes to potential employees, said she was glad she could distribute them all in one location.
“I want to thank the vendors, too,” Long-Bowen said. “ This has been very positive.”
