MERIDIAN —
When three volunteer fire departments arrived on the scene of a house fire Sunday night they found the two-story structure fully engulfed in flames.
Lauderdale County Fire Service Coordinator Allen Dover said Monday morning firefighters from Bailey, Martin and Northeast volunteer fire departments fought the fire that was reported at about 8:15 p.m. but the flames eventually overtook the structure bringing it to the ground.
"The structure was a total loss but fortunately no one was injured during the incident," said Dover. "The damage was so extensive that we have not been able to accurately pinpoint the exact origin of the fire."
Dover said eyewitnesses to the blaze and the homeowner said the fire started somewhere in the kitchen of the 42,000 square foot home located at 6050 Cypress Swamp Drive.
Traffic had to be diverted from the immediate area of the fire for the safety of both motorists and fire and emergency personnel on the scene.

The Drought Is Over
All Mason Irby was hoping for was to find a way on base.
The Southeast Lauderdale sophomore did that and so much more. Irby's single with two outs in the seventh inning broke a tie, lifting the Tigers to a 6-3 MHSAA Class 3A state championship win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday, and handing Southeast (32-7) its first title since 1966. -
