MERIDIAN —
Norman Copeland, Commander-elect for the Robert "Shane" Pugh VFW Post 12124, announced the official opening of the new post today beginning at 9 a.m.
Copeland said the ceremony will take place at the large gazebo and patio in Highland Park near the Dentzel Carousel.
"We have invited several dignitaries including Mayor (Cheri) Barry, our area congressmen, local fire and police officials as well as the State Line Officers of the VFW," Copeland said. "The ceremony will be approximately one hour in length and we will have a short reception with refreshments in the Kindlewood immediately following the ceremony."
Copeland is a 20-year retired veteran of the U.S. Navy submarine force where he served as a torpedoman and missile technician on board SSBN's.
"I have been active in the VFW since 2006 in Texas, Georgia, and now Mississippi," Copeland said. "For the last few months we have been actively recruiting for a new VFW post here to better serve our veterans and community."
Now at 50 members strong Copeland said he is pleased the new post was approved by VFW National Headquarters.
"Our membership is young, diverse, and truly reflective of Meridian, with veterans from all conflicts from World War II through the current battlefields in the Middle East," Copeland said. "Many of our members still serve on active duty at Key Field and NAS Meridian."
Copeland said the post members hope to become a unifying force in the community with a goal of bringing peace, fun, and patriotic good times back to this the historic Highland Park. He said most of the patriotic events the post has planned will be conducted in the park.
Copeland said the driving force of the post is to "honor our dead by helping the living."
"We have a workforce available to assist in any worthwhile endeavor to help our veterans and our community," Copeland said.
