Services today for Meridian teen who died in accident

MERIDIAN —     Joseph Micah Redmond, 18, of Meridian, who died in a single car accident in Ellisville early Saturday morning, will be buried today.

Redmond was a 2012 graduate of Clarkdale High School, where he played soccer, football, baseball and tennis. He was also a youth soccer referee.

"He was an outstanding student and a gifted athlete," Clarkdale High School Principal Cheryl Thomas said. "He was well loved by everybody."

According to an article in the Hattiesburg American, Redmond was involved in a single-car accident reported Saturday morning around 4:30 at Ellisville Truckers Crossing.

Responders found that a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado had apparently run off the road and struck several trees.

Redmond was ejected from the vehicle and was unresponsive when medical first responders arrived on the scene, the Associated Press reported.

Redmond was pronounced dead at the scene by Jones County Deputy Coroner Burl Hall.

Redmond was a student athlete at Jones County Junior College, where he was awarded a scholarship with the men’s soccer team. He was studying chemical engineering.

Thomas said the mood at Clarkdale was somber Monday, as the school conducted an assembly to pray for Redmond's family.

"It was a whole different climate at school this morning," Thomas said. "We will greatly miss him. It is a loss for everybody."

Services for Redmond will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Justin Keene officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
