MERIDIAN —
Poplar Springs Elementary School recently became the first school in the Meridian area to welcome “Museum on Wheels – A Lesson in Visual Arts.”
The “Museum on Wheels” is a visual arts exhibit with replicas of contemporary and classic artwork. The goal of the exhibit is to bring communities together through the power of visual art and to serve as an educational tool for students.
The exhibit ran Aug. 13-Sept. 7 at Poplar Springs Elementary School.
This week (Sept. 9-15) is National Arts Education Week, which was set aside to draw attention to arts education in schools and to build momentum for the remainder of the school year.
“Even in communities that are rich with cultural organizations, this exhibit provides a free and accessible opportunity for students to learn about the elements of visual arts and make connections to the school curriculum, artistic endeavors as well as current exhibits in the community,” said Malcolm White, executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission.

Poplar Springs Principal LaVonda Germany said: “We are excited to have this traveling exhibit as a learning tool for our students and teachers."
She said the exhibit was integrated into the curriculum as teachers use the visual arts to teach math, science, social studies and language arts.
