MERIDIAN —
Lauderdale County will start the new year with a new tax assessor, with challenger James D. Rainey unseating incumbent Jimmy Slay with 63 percent of the vote in Tuesday's Republican run-off election.
Rainey received 6,305 votes to Slay's 3,684. He will be unopposed in the November 8 general election.
"I want to thank God for this. I want to thank the people, and I look forward to serving them," said Rainey. "I look forward to being the people's tax assessor."
Rainey said he will spend the time between now and January, when he takes office, working on ideas for the office.
Slay said he will be supportive of Rainey after he takes office.
"I'd like to thank the people of Lauderdale County for allowing me to serve them as tax assessor for the last three terms," said Slay. "I want to thank the people who prayed for and supported me."
