MERIDIAN —
Chaplain Dennis Marks of the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry at Lauderdale County Detention Facility talked about the 12-year-old program at the November meeting of the Collinsville Community Development Club.
Marks said he has an opportunity to reach many people in jail, and considers it a privilege to minister to those incarcerated.
The minister noted that the more you loved the more it hurts, and asked club members whether or not people could change.
"People can change, sometimes even for the worst," Marks said.
Drugs, gangs and peer pressure can cause people to change.
"God can redeem and change anyone; they can be set free," Marks said. "Those in jail need so much help."
Aware that he cannot minister to those in jail without God, Marks said he relies on God to put words in his mouth so he will say the right words to help and encourage them.
The Nov. 19, 2012, meeting was called to order by club president Faye Houston.
Eleven-year-old Laney Laird of Kosciusko led the Pledge of Allegiance. For devotion, she played "Amazing Grace" on keyboard and sang "Pray."
Several projects were completed during month, including: providing groceries to a needy family for Thanksgiving; continued sponsorship and mailed monetary gift to Baptist Children’s Village; mailed greeting card fronts to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children Recycle Card Program; and delivered magazines to area doctor clinics and nursing homes. Billy and Vistan Allen collected litter on roadsides and worked three hours at Wesley House Community Center.
Houston appointed Allen, Jack Cook and Darrell Harwell to serve on the Nominating Committee to select officers for 2013.
The meeting adjourned and club members and guest enjoyed refreshments and a time of fellowship. The Serving Committee included: Faye Houston, Judy Harwell, Imogene Joyner and Hope Mabry.
The club's next meeting will be the Christmas Party on Dec. 17.
