Mentoring is key to education

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mississippi is growing. Since I began working with Big Brothers Big Sisters, our main focus was, and still is, our volunteers. Obviously without volunteers we would not be able to function, they are the crux of the organization. However, it takes more than volunteers to keep non-profit agencies from going under. As a United Way agency, BBBS has reaped much needed benefits. It’s not a secret that it takes money to operate any business or non-profit organization. Due to the generosity of this community, BBBS will be able to continue furnishing mentors/volunteers to the youth of this community.

Dr. Bounds, State Superintendent of Education, recently said, “Mentors are key...”(to help decrease our drop-out rate). Our statistics prove that students who have a mentor: increase their self-esteem, have more respect for their peers and teachers, and their GPA (grade point average) increases in Language Arts and Math. Someone is listening, our phone is ringing, and people are volunteering.

It takes only one hour per week to volunteer as a mentor. If you would like more information, please call, (601) 484-3619.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is proud to be a United Way Agency, and we thank each of you who gives to this worthwhile, tremendous, and needed agency. Please continue to donate, and consider giving your fair share. For more information regarding United Way, please call, (601) 693.2732. When you give, you are helping others in ways you may not even realize, that’s United Way. Thank you!
