Dumpster dogs, cats deserve better fate

I urge people to consider options other than “dumping” innocent dogs and cats at local dump sites.

I understand that this practice is more common than most of us care to acknowledge and certainly not unique to our area. Clearly, it is a cruel and inhumane practice and brings to light the very worst within us.

There are organizations in our community that can help guide people with unwanted pets in a more humane direction. A couple of options are the Lauderdale County Humane Society and Lauderdale County Animal Control. People who see dislocated dogs and cats within the Meridian city limits can call the local animal shelter, whose employees will pick the animal up.

People who commit such acts don’t consider the consequences of their actions, or perhaps they just don’t care. Recently, I saw a young dog at a local dump site outside the Meridian city limits. I drove on home, but I could not get the image of this “thrown away” dog out of my head. Armed with a can of dog food, I returned to the area to see if I could befriend the animal and perhaps give it a home. Tragically upon my return I found that the heavily trafficked road close to the dump had already claimed the dog’s life.

I left with a tear in my eye after seeing what could have been a beloved family pet and loyal companion wasted to the road.

Before you dump an animal, please reconsider!
