At last, the Taj Mahal of projects associated with former Mayor Smith, has finally gone by the wayside. As reported it was not stopped by the City of Meridian. Apparently, the developer continued to dig at the Meridian tax base wanting an unrealistic supply of money that the City Council eagerly gave away in the past. And, Bobby Smith has changed his stripes to want to spend more money that cannot be anything more than a pipe dream at making a financial success.
How can this Threefoot project charge $149.00 plus bed tax per night be viable at an occupancy rate of 75 percent all the time and compete with I-20 hotels charging much less per night. And of course, if the occupancy rate is 50 percent the charge may be as much as $200 per night lodging. Who is making this project a viable development for Meridian? The long and short of the discussion will be directed to financial support of Meridian taxpayers. Meridian already has the highest taxes for a shrinking city the size of Meridian. And don’t give me the same old political garbage that it is in line. Just look at your tax base, your water tax, your sewer tax, your garbage tax and with the transfer payment income of so many in Meridian the unit real estate tax is outrageous.
Thank you, Mayor Cheri Barry, for a realistic look at this project. The population of the City of Meridian has fallen from the 1960 count of 49,374. Today, we stand at a mark of 38,232 and the citizens have seen nothing but and increased cost to live here. Escape from this tax and expense machine is to Alabama or to the county to abate the want-a-be cost to keep up with the needs of life. We do not need any elective official that does not understand how to balance a checkbook.

Here’s my view!
I spoke at the last Meridian City Council meeting concerning pay for city employees. My intent was to inform the council that many city employees are not being paid equitable salaries. The clerk of the council and other city employees deserve to be paid a competitive salary.
