I am a retired veteran of the Mississippi Army National Guard. I attended the celebration at the dough boy monument today and was saddened to see that the American Flag was not flown at half mast. I asked several of the dignitaries about it including Mayor Cheri Barry, VFW commander and MC Videt Carmichael and was not given a satisfactory answer. It was mandated by the President of the United States that flags be flown at half mast in honor of our fallen soldiers at Fort Hood. I returned to the monument around 2:50 p.m. prior to the parade and still no flag at half mast. I was also saddened that there was no mention of our fallen soldiers at this occasion.
I also noticed that the U.S. Flag and the POW flag was at full mast at the U.S. Post Office downtown.
Even though the courthouse was closed both the U.S. Flag and POW flags were at half mast. Congratulations to some in our county government who knows what's going on. As a former Navy Musician and Mississippi Army National Guard Musician I was not impressed with the recording of TAPS by the so called Navy bugler who did a GOOD job faking it. My thanks to Applebees for the free meal that was given to veterans, it was great.
