MERIDIAN — Guns do kill

Perhaps most of us remember some years ago while millions of Americans and  their families were suffering and dying from cigarette smoke, the tobacco companies were arguing that it was not the fault of their product.

I remember the day that the CEOs of all the major cigarette companies were lined up before Congress and one by one all of them swore under oath that cigarettes are not addictive.

Today people are still dying from lung cancer but we know that tobacco is addictive and that cigarettes do kill.

Today the same argument is raging over gun violence. Those who are profiting from the sale of guns are swearing to high heaven that guns don't kill. But I doubt if this argument sits too well with the parents and other loved ones who are burying their six year olds.

The love of money overrides all compassion and concern for others.

C.E. Swain, WWII vet and retired UMC minister
