MERIDIAN —
I am appalled that Mr. Ziemba presumes to “air what the rest of us are thinking” about the US figure skaters at the Olympics, and to use that athletic event to promulgate inaccuracies and distortions.
First, how can a man crying be inappropriate? Even Jesus wept. Crying and great emotion are not gender specific. Second, where did Mr. Ziemba take world history? His implication that blurring the lines of sexuality had anything to do with the decline of Greece and Rome is absurd. Rome’s inability to control its borders against the invading Goths (manly men I am sure) was the overriding reason it fell. If we should imitate “nations that make distinctions between men and women,” then let’s get our burkas out and put women where they really belong.
Mr. Ziemba’s idealistic boyhood of knives and gunplay explains a great deal about his aggression and need to assure himself of his own masculinity. In past opinion pieces, Mr. Ziemba has touted his Christianity. How does he expect the Kingdom of God on earth (for which the Christ gave His life) to come about if he is teaching his child to perpetuate war, violence and prejudice against those that he fears? It seems to me that Christ Himself would be described as “effeminate” if we judge by Mr. Ziemba’s criteria.
I regret The Meridian Star chose to publish something so ill conceived and poorly thought out.
