DECATUR — The Sylvia Ann Graham Haywood Memorial Scholarship was recently established at East Central Community College.
The scholarship was established by Haywood’s husband, Dr. William Thomas Haywood, who served as ECCC business manager and taught accounting from 1951-58.
Haywood was a member of the ECJC Class of 1954. While at EC, she was an honors student and served as editor of the Wo-He-Lo, the campus yearbook. She was also chosen May Queen and sang in the Madrigals.
Haywood also graduated from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University and received a master’s degree in education from Mercer University.
She taught English and tutored French in both the public and private secondary schools in Macon, Ga. In 1972, Haywood practiced law in Macon and taught law at Mercer. She died of cancer at age 48 in 1984.
The scholarship will be awarded annually — dependent upon availability of funding — to an incoming freshman who enrolls as a full-time ECCC student the fall semester following high school graduation, is in good academic standing, demonstrates financial need and displays leadership qualities and good citizenship.
The ECCC Scholarship Committee will select the award recipient.
