April Burton dropped out of high school at a young age to help take care of her ailing grandmother. She now has her sights set on becoming a nurse.
Zettie Viverette put her education on hold for more than 40 years but made sure her nine children received an education. She has now earned her high school diploma even though she was told “it could not be done.” -
GED graduation honors those completing milestones
It was an evening of celebration for the 40-plus GED graduates during a ceremony at MCC, but for one graduate, James Parker, it signaled the first step of a new future.
“I’m glad I got it,” said Parker about receiving the GED. He said he hopes to further his education and earn a degree in drafting and design. “I wanted to make a living for my kids; support them and do something with my life,” he said. -
ECCC receives grant for Founders’ Gym
East Central Community College’s efforts to renovate Founders’ Gym received a financial boost thanks to an $80,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
The ECCC award is included among 19 projects totaling $2 million in preservation grants provided across the state through the Community Heritage Grant Program, authorized by and funded by the Mississippi Legislature. - School News

EMBDC Awards 2011 Fall Semester Head of the Class
The East Mississippi Business Development Corporation’s Education Committee recently awarded their fall 2011 Head of the Class winners.
The Head of the Class program is for high school students participating in technical and career education from each of the city and county schools, grades 10-12. -
Ross Collins CTC DECA students take top honors at district competition
Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) students from Ross Collins Career and Technical Center recently competed in District Competition at Jones County Community College. Ten out of the 12 competing placed and are eligible to compete at State Competition in February.
