MERIDIAN — This year's winners of Newton County Elementary School's annual spelling bee are Samantha Powell, first place; Trinity Harper, second place; and Yasmine Thames, third place. Samantha, a fifth grader, was the school's representative in the County Spelling Bee.
• Newton County Elementary School Student Thomas Gaddis won first place in the first Division I Talent competition sponsored by the East Central Talented and Gifted Association (ECTAG). Thomas' winning vocal performance was a selection from "Seussical, the Musical." He is the son of Rich and Kay Gaddis.
Several NCES students participated in this inaugural talent event.
• Jessica Suzanne Rose has been selected to receive the Doris and Cecil Seale Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $500 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by Ms. Daisy Seale Moore and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Moore, all of Fairhope, Ala. Mrs. Seale worked for many years with the Mississippi Employment Commission which maintained an office on the MCC campus at that time.
Rose is a 2008 graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School, where she was a member of the Beta Club and the annual staff. Rose is in the second semester of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at MCC. A Dean’s List scholar, her plans are to enter the workforce after graduation.
• Amber K. Bloebaum has been selected to receive the Jerry Greene Hotel Restaurant Supply Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $1,250 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by Jerry Greene. Mr. Greene, a longtime supporter of the College, is a member of the MCC Foundation Board of Directors.
BA 2008 graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School, Bloebaum is a sophomore in the Hotel Restaurant Management Technology Program. She is a member of Delta Epsilon Chi, Distributive Educational Clubs of America. Bloebaum plans to pursue a career in the hospitality industry.

ECCC’s GED graduates relate success stories
April Burton dropped out of high school at a young age to help take care of her ailing grandmother. She now has her sights set on becoming a nurse.
Zettie Viverette put her education on hold for more than 40 years but made sure her nine children received an education. She has now earned her high school diploma even though she was told “it could not be done.” -
GED graduation honors those completing milestones
It was an evening of celebration for the 40-plus GED graduates during a ceremony at MCC, but for one graduate, James Parker, it signaled the first step of a new future.
“I’m glad I got it,” said Parker about receiving the GED. He said he hopes to further his education and earn a degree in drafting and design. “I wanted to make a living for my kids; support them and do something with my life,” he said. -
ECCC receives grant for Founders’ Gym
East Central Community College’s efforts to renovate Founders’ Gym received a financial boost thanks to an $80,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
The ECCC award is included among 19 projects totaling $2 million in preservation grants provided across the state through the Community Heritage Grant Program, authorized by and funded by the Mississippi Legislature. - School News

EMBDC Awards 2011 Fall Semester Head of the Class
The East Mississippi Business Development Corporation’s Education Committee recently awarded their fall 2011 Head of the Class winners.
The Head of the Class program is for high school students participating in technical and career education from each of the city and county schools, grades 10-12. -
Ross Collins CTC DECA students take top honors at district competition
Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) students from Ross Collins Career and Technical Center recently competed in District Competition at Jones County Community College. Ten out of the 12 competing placed and are eligible to compete at State Competition in February.
