Crestwood’s Shevondra Clayton cops ‘Teacher of the Year’ honors

MERIDIAN —     Crestwood Elementary School math and science teacher Shevondra Clayton has been named "Teacher of the Year" for 2011-12.

Humbled by the honor, Clayton, who has taught at Crestwood for two years, credits her students for her accomplishments.

"My students deserve 99 percent of this recognition; they make me the teacher that I am today," she said.

"I absolutely LOVE teaching and think it is one of the best, if not the best, career in America," she said. "I wouldn’t trade my career of teaching for anything. I thank God for placing me in an awesome career, at an awesome school, around awesome students, teachers, faculty, staff and administrators.”

Known for her words of inspiration, the fourth grade teacher said, “Give your students more than they expect, and you will get back more than you ever expected.”

Clayton is actively involved in her school and participates on various committees within the school and district, including: the Superintendent Advisory Council, School-wide Planning Team, Interview Committee, Field Day Committee, MCT2 Spirit Committee, Positive Behavior Support Interventions and (PBIS) chairperson, and Health Care Advisory Council chairperson.

Clayton recently received a master of education degree from William Carey University. She is currently enrolled in the specialist program at Mississippi State University, Meridian Campus, pursuing a degree in educational leadership administration.

In addition to teaching Clayton is also a registered nurse at John C. Stennis Hospital in DeKalb.

Clayton is married to Antonio Clayton of Lauderdale. She is the daughter of the Rev. Wayne and Crystal Benn.
