• RESTON, Va. – As part of its national effort to help teens develop and embrace 21st century literacy skills, the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) seeks high school teachers for an expense-paid, two-week summer institute.
One hundred and seventy-five teachers will be selected to attend the 2010 Reynolds High School Journalism Institute. The postmark deadline for application is March 1.
There is no cost to the teacher or high school. Students who take part in journalism classes or clubs are the ultimate beneficiaries, emerging as stronger readers, writers, critical thinkers and communicators.
Air transportation, lodging, meals, materials, tuition and continuing education credits are covered by ASNE with a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
Teachers from high schools that lack student media or have struggling journalism programs are especially encouraged to apply. The Reynolds Institute will take place at five accredited journalism schools:
• Arizona State University, Tempe, June 13-25
• University of Texas at Austin, June 20-July 2
• Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, July 11-23
• University of Nevada, Reno, July 11-23
• University of Missouri, Columbia, July 18-30

Feb. 23 – Lamar School will host an open house for prospective students and parents, from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. The open house is for students in grades K-12. Lamar is located at 544 Lindley Road.

• DECATUR – A workshop for the American College Test (ACT) will be held March 30 at 8 a.m. in Newton Hall, Room 60, at East Central Community College. The workshop is designed to assist students prior to taking the college entrance exam. The registration deadline to reserve seating is March 26.
Cost to attend the workshop is $10 and should be sent to ECCC Career-Technical Education, P. O. Box 129, Decatur, MS 39327.
