Where have you been?
In response to the Letter to the Editor written by Evelyn Watkins of Meridian which appeared in the November 15, 2009 edition of The Meridian Star, I would like to enlighten Ms. Watkins about some facts that she is not aware of.
The gentle man in full battle uniform and pulling the caisson which bore the flag-draped “coffin” is, in fact, Reverend Wayne Hunt, who has performed this service to the community for twenty-five years in the Veterans Day parade. Reverend Hunt served his country in the United States Army for two years at Fort Hood, Texas, with an additional year in Vietnam. He originally did this march for his friends who lost their lives in Vietnam, and then extended his mission to include all veterans who made the supreme sacrifice.
Ms. Watkins’ comment of “How could anyone think that a flag-draped coffin would be a suitable tribute for a Veterans Day parade?” and that she “believed that is reserved for Memorial Day” most certainly demonstrates her lack of knowledge about the entire situation. There is no Memorial Day parade in Meridian; therefore, what better date is there to celebrate our veterans for “their service to this country and show our appreciation”, which is appropriate. How could we remind them of their funeral?”
Reverend Hunt is the father of one of my daughters-in-law. Two of my sons are militarily connected with the Air Force (23 years) and Air Guard (13 years), and all the families support their missions without reservation.
Ms. Watkins, I would suggest that you find yourself with full possession of the knowledge of your subject before you write another letter of unjustified criticism to The Meridian Star.
