India.Arie to appear Thursday at the MSU Riley Center
Her first single “Video,” and her multi–platinum debut album Acoustic Soul were released in 2001. Her sophomore release, the platinum selling Voyage to in 2002 was hailed worldwide by critics. The New York Times called it “music that only further enhances her reputation as an artist of substance; centering on her acoustic guitar and confident but restrained vocals, it recalls such soul masters as Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack.”
In 2006 she released her No. 1 charting album Testimony: Vol.1, Love & Relationship.

India.Arie has sold over 8 million albums worldwide, including the double-platinum Acoustic Soul, the platinum Voyage to India and her number one album Testimony: Vol.1, Life & Relationship. Her honors include 17 Grammy nominations, 2 Grammy Awards, 4 NAACP Image Awards, and various awards from BET, Billboard, MTV, VH–1, Vogue, Essence, and others. Her songs have appeared in such films as Sex and the City, The Secret Life of Bees, A Soldier’s Story, Radio, A Shark’s Tale and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Arie launched her own label, Soulbird Music, in June 2008 through Universal Republic, with the release of singer-songwriter Anthony David's album Acey Deucy and the Grammy-nominated single "Words," a duet with Arie.

Preserving culture ... and wildlife
Named in honor of Kelly Mitchell, the Gypsy Queen buried in Meridian’s Rosehill Cemetery, Queen City Gypsies was formed in 2002 by Gypsy Williams and has grown to be an important part of Meridian's alternative art scene — and beyond.
"Sister troupes have started other places from members who moved away," said Williams, whose whole life has been about dance. "I wanted to give a new form of dance and art to the community and connect with the cultural history of Meridian." -
Ford Center's new season includes Broadway, family shows and big-name performers
OXFORD — The Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts brings classic Broadway, fun family shows and big-name performers to the University of Mississippi for the 2010-11 season.
The season includes five shows in the Ford Center Series, seven in the Artist Series and four in the Ford Family Friendly Series, as well as a few extras.
"This season's offerings continue our tradition of presenting high quality performing arts and entertainment to the north Mississippi region," said Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center director. "The number of performances on the Artist and Family Series has been increased while we have focused more on presenting American musicals on the Ford Series." -

MCA taps Perry as new president
The Meridian Council for the Arts has tapped new leadership for the upcoming 2010-11 year. Serving as President will be Melinda Perry, a local arts educator. Not only has Perry been active with the MCA, she has contributed her talents and energy to other arts organizations in Meridian, including the Meridian Little Theatre.
