Birthday parties planned for Jimmie Rodgers

MERIDIAN —     Jimmie Rodgers was born on Sept. 8, 1897.

    His recording career began in 1927 in Bristol, Tenn., and continued until his death in 1933.

    His music continues to influence musicians today both directly and indirectly. To learn more about Jimmie Rodgers visit the Jimmie Rodgers Foundation website, www.jimmierodgers.com.

    Here are some local plans to celebrate the 115th anniversary of Jimmie Rodgers' birth:

    The Jimmie Rodgers Foundation invites the public to embrace the legacy of Meridian’s native son, The Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers on his 115th birthday.

    The Jimmie Rodgers Museum, located in Highland Park at 1725 Highland Park Drive in Meridian, will be open with free admission on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and again on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

    The Jimmie Rodgers Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. year round. The normal admission is $8 per adult, $5 for students 12 and older, and $5 for senior citizens, military, and groups of ten or more. Children younger than 12 are admitted free.

    The International Singing Brakeman Association will celebrate Jimmie Rodgers' birthday in the Hospitality Room at the Best Western on South Frontage Road in Meridian, beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.

    Admission is $10. Food will be available.

    All the TISBA Troopers will be performing, and special guest legendary guitar player Bob Saxton of Laurel will perform. Saxton played with Patsy Cline as well as other well-known performers.
