MERIDIAN — A man authorities say was fishing from the banks of the upper Bonita Lakes drowned this evening. Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler confirmed that the 43-year old man was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m. at Anderson's Regional Medical Center in Meridian. Meridian Police Department Chief James Reed says police, fire, and Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency personnel were called to Mayor's Point, on the extreme end of the upper lake, to a report of a man in the water. Reed said the man was reportedly in the area fishing from the bank with family members. Family members, Reed says, made the 911 call to Central Dispatch when the man, for unknown reasons, fell into the lake around 5:15 p.m. Reed says firefighters from the Meridian Fire Department and officers with the MPD jumped in to pull the victim from the water. Reed says an investigation has been launched by his department and added authorities with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks may take up the investigation as it was a drowning incident. The victim's name is being withheld until all next of kin can be notified.
